Sophia Coppola marries long time love

I love Sophia Coppola's style. She's both elegant and hipster cool. That's difficult to pull off. She seems to have an innate understanding of what suits her.

Anyway, this past weekend she married Thomas Mars of the band Phoenix at her family home in Southern Italy. Which, by the way, also happens to be a five star hotel named Palazzo Margherita owned by Papa Coppola.

Her dress of lilac chiffon was custom designed by Azzedine Alaia. I'd love to see a full picture of the dress. It looks incredibly pretty.

Kate's wedding.... Part Two

Forgive me for blogging about this wedding, not only for a second time, but immediately following the last blogpost........

As you might well imagine, I absolutely adored this wedding. It completely reflects the bride's style.

The "other" Kate's wedding

Well, she finally did it. Kate Moss married rock star Jamie Hince earlier this month. True to her own style, Kate looked amazing. It was a fabulous meeting of a perfect midsummer's eve with Edwardian style meets 1920's glamour and excess.

The Grade II listed Norman church where Kate and Jamie were married in the Cotswolds.

Kate in a bias cut gown designed by John Galliano. Her dress featured gold leaf embroidery and rhinestones.

She kept her hair very soft and loose and her makeup natural and minimal.

The tall girl at the back is Kate's younger sister. And already causing a stir in the fashion world with her pretty face.

Totally love Kate's veil. Franch lace embroidered with flowers . So 1920's !

I love that she had so many bridesmaids. Kate, Jamie and daughter Lila Grace.

Palm Springs meets Scotland in Toronto

We had a wonderful opportunity this past month to completely design a rooftop installation for one of our corporate clients' own home.

South West exposure....... thinking......desert..... dry, hot. It is SO not cottage garden flowers and plants for this terrace. This is extreme territory !

We needed to compile a list of plants that could survive a drought tolerant, wind exposed position. We also wanted both drama and tropical in an extreme sort of way......hence Palm Springs meets Scotland.

Plants: a knotted pom pom Scots pine, aloe vera, various succulents, bougainvillea (totally love), lava rocks, various cactus and other sun loving gems.

It worked very nicely! We are so pleased with the results.....

And the client was very happy also. We received an email this morning saying they spent the evening on their terrace enjoying their Palm Springs meets zen like garden, in Toronto.

An "Elegant Farmer's Market" wedding

Phew, it's been a busy spring and early summer. Between container planters, rooftop terrace installations, corporate events and the start of wedding season, I'm feeling rather dizzy. It's been quite the whirlwind over the past couple of months. And more weddings to come !

In the meantime I wanted to post some pictures of a wedding we did this past weekend at one of my all time favourite places, Miller Lash House. I love this place ! I love this place 'cause I always think it's a lovely surprise for your guests. Anyone who knows Toronto will understand when I say, "yeah the wedding venue is located at the 401 and Morningside" normally respond with "what's out there"? It's Scarborough for crying out loud ! Or "Scarberia" as we used to call it. Let's just say it's the burbs and as such does not conjure up images of lovely 1920's Arts and Crafts houses. But there it is. And once you arrive, you feel transported.

I hope our quick snaps convey how lovely this wedding was. The feel was "an elegant farmer's market" without actually looking like a farmer's market. We took a textural, organic approach. We used hessian (burlap) runners on the tables, linen napkins, displayed peaches with scrolled name tags and we kept the head table "humble" with simple ferns in aged stone containers, while the guest tables had sumptuous arrangements of garden roses, hydrangeas, clematis vines and peonies. We wanted the guests to feel special !

I love how it all turned out.

The peaches were gorgeous, not too ripe for our needs, made a faux stem with birch twigs and placed the guests' names on lovely paper and scrolled the edges.

The final table. It was a bit of a cafuffle (?) to get the peaches in place. But finally the table looked adorable. The brides' father made the chalkboard. Sweet.

The lovely Robin, a wonderful creative florist, putting the final touches to a guest table.

The view into the tent. I loved the hessian runners on the tables.

Oh, and I should mention that most weddings take place in the tent, not the house. That's because it's not a huge house, but it is awfully pretty.

The head table up close. So simple, but so chic. The hessian, the aged pots with ferns and peaches randomly laid along the table. We also placed two cherries on the menu as an added charming touch.

It's all about the details ! These are things guests notice and appreciate.

Jessica, the beautiful bride, with her parents. Her bouquet was composed of sweet peas, lisianthus, waxflowers, veronica, soft foliages and freesias.

Thank you to Jessica and her incredible mother Eunice. Both were so brilliant to work with. Jessica had an inspiration and we hope we helped her to achieve it. Eunice, thank you for all of your support and kindness.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Sunday flower class. What a blast ! Check out some of our photos below.

We had some very lovely Spring flowers; tulips, sweet peas, ranunculus, hyacinths, but also garden roses, guelder rose, freesias, peonies (yes, early peonies !) and some nice foliages.

That would be me, waiting nervously for the students to arrive. Sorry about the goofy look on my face.

I'd like to introduce you to one of the loveliest people I know...Kathy MacLachlan. Kathy was one of my very first customers (10 years ago) and has been a great client and friend ever since.

I think everyone was totally into their creations. And by the way, doing an AMAZING job.

Everyone seemed to like the choice of mossy urn for their arrangements. Something they would definitely use after their flowers had expired. I heard talk of planting with herbs for the kitchen counter. Nice one !

Bespoke Country House Parties

So, last year I stumbled across this company that throws bespoke country house parties in the beautifully charming Cotswolds. It just so happens that one of the partners' in this retreat is Sophie Conran (yes, that Conran, daughter of the great Terence). Man, it must be in their blood to be so entreprenuerial and also so talented. This family rocks !

And so does this place ! Temple Guiting is actually owned by a fellow called Steven Collins. Steven decided that he wanted to convert this family property into an investment. Smart man. Together with the famed Sophie Conran they have created this gorgeous retreat for anybody (which is semi affordable if you don't mind saving for a year and not take another holiday for another year --- the weekend rates will make you gulp a little) to hold your own private country party (just like the wealthy Edwardians did).

Sounds good to me.You name it. It can be organized. They have experts from a varied and wide set of backgrounds. Hmmmm.....want to do a little fly fishing ? No problem. Always wanted to spend an afternoon baking artisinal breads ? No problemo. How about hot air ballooning, wine tasting, jam making, shooting, learning to play bridge/poker ? It's covered. And of course, my favourite......the floristry course.

All this, and in the most gorgeous setting. The accomodation is to die for. Heck who cares about the activities. I just want to go and hang out....go for long country walks, read by a roaring fire, eat wonderful meals, drink great wine and sleep in the most sumptuous bedrooms ever !

Of course, there's always the National Trust or the Landmark Trust if you're not in need of so much pampering but still want to have that great country house/manor experience. I think this is more my speed and more of what my wallet can handle. But if money were not an object........ then here I come Temple Guiting. Just for the weekend only.

Wim Wenders is one of my favourite directors. His work is so subtle, spare and beautiful. A true artist. So it has not surprised me that he has created an exquisite homage to the late modern dance choreographer Pina Bausch on film. AND presented it in 3D.

Ms. Bausch saw art as a vehicle for social criticism. She wanted her audience to react as they felt. It didn't matter whether they simply liked what they saw. She wanted a response. It had to engage you - positive or negative.

The film premiered at The Berlin Film Festival 2011 and opens in Europe in April. I can't wait for it to come to Toronto. It looks magical and beautiful.

OMG, I so hope so. As Alexander McQueen's right hand she helped to create some of the most fantastical and beautiful clothing in the last 10 years. So you know Kate's dress will be spectacular (in the chicest, most elegant way) in this woman's hands. Something to really look forward to. Of course, everyone's keeping "mum" on this but fingers crossed !

And yes, I'm dying to know which florist will be given the phenomenal opportunity to create Kate's bouquet.

Resume: Madame de Castellane is the Creative Director of Dior's Haute Joaillerie. Prior to this M. de Castellane designed for CHANEL for 14 years but has been with Dior since 1998. Victoire has said that she created her first piece of jewelry at the age of 5.

While I find it very hard to believe, M. de Castellane admits that in real life she doesn't actually like flowers. "I can't get attached to something that dies so quickly so, I make flowers that last forever".

Her exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery in Paris looks beautiful. Wish I was in Paris (sigh) !

I love the whole concept of this exhibition. Victoire was thinking about how women wear jewelry only to remove and instantly hide away in some box. She wanted to experiment with displaying the pieces as sculpture. In doing so she has created each piece as a specimen with a botanical twist, even so far as to make up a fictional botanical classification system. Each piece of jewelry has a fake Latin name...love it.

The jewels are displayed under glass, very much like Victorian curiosities.

Charlotte Dellal's gorgeous wedding dress

I don't know how I missed this - I must have been living under a rock or something. One of London's most lovely "It Girls" the divine Ms. Dellal got married last year to a Mr. Maxim Crewe at her family home in the British countryside.

And WOW, what a dress.

Her dress was designed by Giambattista Valli. The gown had an overskirt that Charlotte could remove later in the evening transforming her look from a gorgeous, elegant bride to gorgeous, sexy newlywed (seen in last photo - 2nd one in) !

Don't you just love it ?

Plus, I think she has great style anyway. Very ladylike.

Born in Korea, Mr. Choi moved to London to study fashion. His clothes are now sold through the Dover Street Market (one of my favest fashion markets) and at DEBUT in NYC. Have a peekaboo.....

Let's just say you were in Paris on Valentine's Day with someone really special. What would be one of the first, sweetest, romantic things you would do ? Ok..... so kissing and sipping champagne in a fabulously charming cafe or bistro aside. That's a given. But later..... well yes, of course you would send the loveliest bouquet ever ! How could you not ? It's Paris for heaven's sake !

Well, it was inevitable I suppose. Vera Wang is about to launch a VERY reasonably priced diffusion line of her own luxurious wedding dresses. Ranging in price from $600.00 to $1400.00 (US) - YES, I am totally serious, the price point is....... well......fantastic !

Colours in the collection range from soft white, ivory, champagne to blush.
Get this: the one shouldered gown: $1200
The middle gown: $700
The gorgeous champagne dress: $1200.

The details carry all of the classic Vera Wang touches, beautiful pleating, ruffles, draping and pretty sashes.

The WHITE line will also be selling veils, hair accessories, jewelry and I believe also bridesmaid's dresses.

The collection comes out in February in the US exclusively through David's Bridal. But it is coming to Toronto March 2011 at Meadowvale Shopping Centre in Mississauga and Smart Centre Scarborough.

Baby, it's COLD outside !

Yep, as I write this on a quiet, beautiful Sunday morning, the temperature outside sits at -20 celsius dipping to -33 with the wind chill factor ! Ooooh yes, welcome to Canada. But I love it. The sky is a sparkly blue, the air is crisp, snow everywhere and there is a stillness that I find soothing. Mind you, you must be dressed for it and even then one needs to be careful. It can be dangerous at these temperatures.

But enough of winter, let's get onto dreams and fantasy holidays. Last year I stumbled upon a gorgeous website www.absolute-escape.com. I think I came upon it through the British newspaper The Telegraph.
Anyway, in the Property section there was an article about an interior designer who was selling Mas St Esteve, his home in the south of France with all of its' furnishings as part of the deal. Gosh, I wish I could recall the fellow's name but I can't. Sorry.

I don't know if he ever sold it or decided to hang on and rent it out but it's definitely for rent. For the modest sum of $10,000 per week (well it does accomodate 12 people - so that's not too bad) you can
enjoy this handsomely restored farmhouse located near the village of Isle sur la Sorgue also known as the "Venice of Provence". Have a drool, umm, I mean look ....

What a pretty sitting room. Imagine having a lovely cup of tea with a great book in hand. I love the sofa and the rustic jar filled with garden roses.

Champagne lunch anyone ? I think a semi formal setting like this is so chic for a casual but elegant lunch. Oh, did I mention that it can be arranged for a Michelin star chef to be on staff should you not care for the "self catering" approach ?

Errr, can't quite read the label. Something about a ......... -du-Pape. Must be a local wine of some sort. The cheeses look scrumptious and the beautifully monogrammed napkins -- classic.

The kitchen has a lovely open, contemporary feel. It think it's quite big.

Oh, and just in case Mas Ste Esteve doesn't suit, Absolute Escape also has two properties in Verbier, Switzerland for all you ski types and one property in Marrakech, Morrocco for a hit of exotica.

I have not blogged in so long I feel like I have to start all over again !

I very much admire those bloggers who are relentless and committed to this wonderful place where thinkers, writers, tastemakers, artists, humourists, fashionistas and just all round divine people share their beautiful worlds and world view with us.

When I started I was pretty good about posting fairly regularly. Then I started to run out of a little steam. This is serious work ! I couldn't keep up. Mind you I do have a pretty good excuse... being a florist I get up very early every day to yada, yada, yada........ of course I don't have an excuse ! Like I'm the only one who has to get up early ?

Well folks, I will, one more time, attempt to start this year off by commiting to a year of blogging.

Wish me luck ! And eeeeh, I hope I'll stick it out.

A couple of weeks ago I received an email from my friends at PARTS GALLERY inviting me to the opening of a new selection of paintings by one of their artists Judith Geher. The above painting accompanied the invitation and I instantly thought, "I've gotta see this for real". It truly resonated with me. But I'm not quite sure what hit me first. Was it the colours ? Perhaps it was the mood of the painting - so sexy and romantic. Maybe it was the soft swirls and curls of her hair. Her icy blue eyes ? Or was it the way the paint went from heavy dollops of colour to no paint at all ? It almost felt...mmmm... not quite finished. Whatever it was, I thought it was beauuutiful.

I immediately checked PARTS website to see more of her work and instantly thought of my niece Carey. One email later and we had a date to check out Judith's work. And we were not disappointed.

Bouquet
Being a florist, this painting thrilled me. A young woman immersing herself into the intoxicating smell off of a bouquet. Sweet !!!

Picnic
While I love Titian, I think this was really my favourite. I loved the shades of greens and the bouquet was gorgeously painted. It was painted on two boards (a duotych?) and I have just the spot for it in my house !

The blues in this painting were so ethereal. So delicate, feathery and light.

Plus, I love the kiss.

At this time of year I fall completely and madly in love with this colour palette. Firey reds and oranges bursting with life and passion but beautifully balanced by plums, burgundies, grey greens and more subtle burnt oranges. Some people call these jewel tones.

The textures in the flowers and the old world vibe of this picture totally speak to me.

Both arrangements convey a sense and feeling of autumn yet they're filled with spring flowers ! Did you notice the tulips and ranunculus ?

Colour is definitely a seasonal thing for me. In the fall, it's jewel tones as in the pics above. It doesn't matter that there are Spring flowers in the arrangement. The colours remind us of the time of year.

The winter calls for deeper reds and burgundies with even deeper greens or alternatively wintry whites. In early spring I'm loving pale lavenders, blues and soft yellows which lead into the softer pinks, peaches and creams of late spring/early summer. And high summer is all about fuscha pinks, corals, hot reds and bright greens.

How does colour speak to you ?

To our beautiful bride Bryn......thank you for being so delightful to work with !!!

Weddings can be pretty stressful events. Even when you're marrying the man of your dreams, planning such a festive occasion can take its' toll. And no wonder. You've basically decided to celebrate and share something extremely intimate and special with maybe 50, 100, 200 or, as in our wedding today with 350 guests. Many of whom, especially beyond 200 guests, you really don't know, if at all ! The details (and believe me they are endless) can overwhelm.

The bottom line is you want your party be a roaring success. You want people to leave your reception and say "what a wonderful evening and by the way, didn't the Bride look beautiful" (sorry Grooms, it really is about the bride).

So, when I meet with couples to talk about their wedding I always remind them of the following:

You've decided to throw a party. Enjoy the planning. Glitches will and do happen. But most are manageable and easily corrected.

Be confident that you have chosen the best vendors for your wedding. Yes, have ongoing dialogue and communication with them, but in the end you must trust them to do their job. That's why you hired them. Right ?

Smile, smile and smile some more.......have fun !! It's one day. Relish all of it because it goes by pretty quickly.

I WANT IT TO BE PERFECT...is wayyyyy too much pressure to put on yourself and everyone else. I saw famous wedding planner Colin Cowie on Oprah. Oprah asked him what can a bride expect from him. He replied "I will do the best job I can and work very, very hard to achieve the look and feeling you want but......I don't do perfect. It's impossible". Ladies, Mr. Cowie does weddings costing millions of dollars !

Most importantly, remember that your guests are following your cue. If that six tier wedding cake suddenly collapses on one side resembling a small landslide (BTW that did happen at one of our weddings) and you fall apart crying, your guests will cry. If you laugh, your guests will laugh. That's the difference between a wonderful wedding and a bad wedding. Make your guests feel great. Because they want to see you have a wonderful time and have a fabulous party. They want to celebrate your future life together !

You decided to throw a party. Go with it !

I so loved her dress. And doesn't she have the greatest smile ?

Robin, one of our fabulous designers created Bryn's bouquet. It's filled with the most fragrant garden roses, the softest pink dahlias and yes, the palest pink ranunculus.

Her veil is simple and pretty. Perfect for her dress and style.

I loved her nude toned shoes. How fashionable !

Grey......you are my sunshine

Well of course I LOVE the sunshine (sans humidity). That's a given. Waking up to a sunshiney morning with birdsong and the prospect of the entire day ahead of me fills me with joy.

But ya know sometimes a gal likes some broodiness. Perhaps a little coolness and dull atmosphere to face. So rather than making you get up and go, darker days make you consider, reconsider or take time out, go slow (you know the days you just want to cosy up in bed), go for long romantic walks on abandoned beaches, be serene, be contemplative.

And the colour that most speaks to me and gives me that sense of quiet, romance and contemplation is GREY. Pale greys, muddy greys, French greys, gloomy greys, deep, dark black greys. Yummy.

I should also mention I love it as a gorgeous colour/neutral for interiors. Here are some of my favourites........

Nigella Lawson has a new cookbook coming out this September: Kitchen Recipes from the Heart of the Home.

I love cookbooks and in particular I am a huge fan of women who cook. Their books always feel more authentic to me - honest, approachable and doable. So in my kitchen (almost finished btw) you'll find Marcella Hazan, Alice Waters, The River Cafe gals, Julia Child, Anne Willan and Ina Garten. Yes, ok I also have Jamie Oliver, Nigel Slater and Anthony Bourdain all of whom I also absolutely adore.

But for some reason I never got into Nigella. I think I just kind of thought she was all fluff and played on her attractiveness and perhaps didn't venture beyond cupcakes and spaghetti.

Then a couple of years ago I happened to read an interview with her that took place on a train ride from London to Brighton. First Class of course. The interviewer was commenting on how striking she looked and that several, rather well dressed businessmen were giving her admiring glances to which she was apparently completely oblivious.

The interviewer asked her a question and doggone it I can't remember what the question was but it had something to do with how she looked. However, I do remember her response and have held it close ever since. It's not a direct quote but it was something like:

"I only look in the mirror once a day. In the morning I'll fix my hair and makeup and that's it. Because I know I'm never, ever going to look as good as I feel".

Is this not true ladies ? It's so true. Ever since, Nigella rocks. So I'll be checking out her new book which by the way is getting some decent reviews.

Mine is Out of Africa.

Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love this film. I watch it at least once a year. Meryl Streep was phenomenal in the part of Karen Blixen. And the scenery, the costumes, the interiors, the music, the other beautifully casted characters..... the story. This is a perfect film.

It doesn't matter how many times I see it, I'm still held spellbound. One of the most compelling scenes is Karen reciting a poem at the funeral of Dennis Finchhatten. I reduces me to tears every time.

If you haven't seen this movie and your only exposure to Meryl is Mamma Mia or Julie and Julia, please rent this film. This is a joy to watch.

What can I say ? Dries .... understands women. His clothes are chic, sophisticated and wearable. I love him.

It's feminine without the sugar. It's just feminine ! Dries Van Noten's clothes make women feel confident.

I love this camouflage style dress. Very chic.

Just seriously pretty.

O.K. I'm thinking late afternoon lunch with the hubby in this lovely ensemble and a cab ride uptown to the gallery opening of a cherished friend's latest work. I'm going to be honest here. I think people are far too casual these days. I personally would love to see a ban on running shoes and athletic wear in public. Unless you're actually excercising.

I've always been a huge Van Morrison fan. Astral Weeks, Moondance, Tupelo Honey and Wavelength were much played albums at my place. Notice I said albums. Yikes ! I'm really starting to feel like a dinosaur. But I digress. Van Morrison is phenomenal. His music and lyrics are pure poetry. Timeless. Original.

I've also been a fan of a fabulous Canadian blues guy called Colin James who just happens to have taken on the near impossible task of singing and NAILING one of Van's classic songs......Into the Mystic.

Wow....have a listen. And it doesn't hurt that he's very easy on the eyes.

I am so happy ..... the TOAST AW 2010 catalogue will be here soon.

In the meantime, the lovely, amazing people at TOAST have put together this gorgeous film giving us a glimpse into the photo shoot and the clothes. I am in TOAST heaven. This year they're off to Venice and the South Tyrol.

I am totally into the slowness of this film. It reminds me that in our high tech instant world that we have lost the ability to just be still and be in the moment. So be assured, it builds. The beginning of the film is spare and feels rather bland. But if you stick with it, the ending is hypnotic and romantic. And I can't wait to see the actual clothes.

I'm afraid I have to admit I'm done with this summer weather. I know I'm gonna eat my words come mid January, but this is just too darn hot and humid for me. It's been relentless here in Toronto. Of course if you're lucky enough to have a lovely little cottage to retreat to....then God bless you. I can't wait for Fall.

And while the cooler weather is a big draw for me I'm also excited about the fabulous line up of clothing I've started to see in the stores and from the fashion shows. A new favourite this year is Isabel Marant. I've admired Ms. Marant's clothes from a distance. I love her extremely cool, rock and roll aesthetic. The look is definitely chic with an edge. But of course her clothes looked best on hip fashionista types.

However her Fall 2010 showed clothes that felt more grown up and I actually saw things I could imagine wearing. Have a look.

Modern with a nod to the 50's.

I love the metallic, dressy vibe of the skirt with this chicly (is that a word ?) military style shirt.

Unfortunately the trousers are a no go for me but the jacket would definitely work.

I love this top with the Japanese style sash. For me it would have to be Katherine Hepburn style palazzo pants or a lovely pair of silky ankle grazing trousers.

You know when I first saw this I simultaneously thought of Anna Wintour and Carine Roitfeld. While their personal dress styles seem so different to me somehow I can imagine both of them wearing a version of this.

Yeah, I just love this. A leetle longer and I am there !

Before I even saw this pic, I saw a dress similar to this in Aritzia (a great Canadian clothing shop) on the weekend and thought, wow! I want this dress. Now that I think of it Aritzia's fall line up seems to be channeling Isabel Marant.

One of our contemporary designs.......

We love it when our clients want something contemporary, especially if the setting for the flowers is spare, elegant and drop dead gorgeous ! It's all about those well chosen minimalist accents that give a room or home that something special. They're not faddish or trendy at all, but rather timeless details. Maybe a modern home or building is not everyone's cup of tea but there is an austere yet striking beauty about it that pulls me in. John Pawson.......love him.

Lucky for us we have some pretty amazing clients, both personal and corporate who have extremely exacting and fabulous taste. Yes, it's slightly intimidating but that's because it's so damn hard to do well and still feel graceful.

Wedding flowers

Just some pics I found from a small, intimate wedding show we did at the Carlu, a fabulous art deco venue.

Beautiful double white freesia bouquet wrapped with luxurious pleated satin ribbom from Mokuba.

If you like scent in your bouquet, the double white freesia is a divine choice.

A lush white and green bouquet presented in a square cube wrapped/scrunched with lovely Indian silk in a caramely taupe shade.

Un charmant plus la noce...

A most charming wedding it was.

The ceremony took place at home. Unfortunately we had a torrential downpour and there was no cover from the rain ! Tom and Shauna had decided earlier in the day to continue with plans for an outdoor ceremony hoping the rain would cease, even for the briefest moment. No such luck I'm afraid. So there we were setting up in the rain.

On the one hand it was quite refreshing and a relief as we have been experiencing the most humid weather . On the other, I can only imagine it must have made for a very quick ceremony and a mad dash back into the house for champagne and air conditioning ! Though sounds like fun to me because as some of you know I love rain !

Unfortunately, we didn't snap any pics from the backyard as the rain slowed us down and we had to make haste to the reception for set up.

Thankfully the reception was held indoors at a local restaurant. I love the vibe of this room. You almost feel you are in Paris (if you don't look out the window). The exposed brick, the crisp white linens, simple table setting and the light streaming through the room was so pretty.

Flowers included garden roses, stocks, wild carrot, lisianthus and dahlias

The style was loose and seasonal with a vintagey feel.

A small intimate affair with family and friends....forty or so. Perfect.

Shauna (the bride) wanted a simple, charming yet chic look.

This was the large bouquet that David quickly snapped inside the house.The colours are a little off here. However, these flowers really shone on the corner of the large wooden, marble topped bar at the restaurant. Wish I could have gotten a picture, but guests had started to arrive when we got there.

Graydon Hall Manor is one of the prettiest venues in the city. I love doing weddings here.

These photos were taken in the romantic little chapel inside the manor. This was a small affair with family and close friends held on a recent Sunday morning. The flowers were sumptuous and lush and arranged into a classic bowl shaped urn. I love these urns.

Some of you may recall my post last Christmas about purchasing my first ever Diptyque candle, Pomander. It was utterly delicious and lasted quite a long time. I am definitely hooked.

So, I recently picked up another Diptyque candle. This time I bought Baies (berries) and again, it is super, super lovely. Incredibly subtle and sweet, the perfect scent for this time of year.

I also love the look of the candle partcularily the label's design and font. It feels positively luxurious and looks very pretty sitting on our mantle.

Keep it simple, keep it imaginative and always keep it sophisticated. Very much like these flowers by Christian Tortu.

When in doubt, opt for one colour and one flower type and do it in abundance. Sixty pure white tulips make a fantastic bouquet and will always impress. This is a particularly successful formula when certain flowers are in season and are very affordable; tulips in March, lilacs in May, peonies in June, hydrangeas in July and dahlias in August.

If the choice is between a $15.00 bunch of inferior flowers or one exquisite bloom that costs $10.00 - go for the latter. The experience will be much more satisfying and luxurious.

Flowers are about the moment. They are not about four days from now. It's all about the moment you received them, the moment you impulsively bought them, the moment you gave them to someone special.

And remember that flowers are your calling card. They say so much about you and your style.

Flower dislikes: "overly coiffed bouquets"

That was how one of our brides' described a look she did not want for her wedding.

A very sassy, stylish young woman she knew precisely the ambiance she wanted to create for her guests.

Our brief: Imagine an elegant, easy going affair with loose, seasonal flowers. The wedding was happening in the city so "please steer clear of that country or just picked from the garden feel". However, she requested that we work with flowers available at this time of year - delphiniums, peonies, sweet peas, wild carrot and astilbe - classic country blooms.

Our plan: To keep the look urban and chic, we opted for curvy glass vases with a slightly retro, feminine vibe to complement our soft flowers. We chose a limited yet sophisticated colour palette - gun metal grey, lavender, purple, very soft greens with hints of the palest shell pinks.

I think we succeeded. Have a look.

Romantic rainy weddings

Personally, I love the rain. Mind you, I wouldn't want an entire season of it, but I do love the moody nature of it all. The sound of a light drizzle hitting the roof makes me want to get all cozy - make tea, delve into a great book or just while away some hours with my favourite magazines and perhaps a wonderful glass of something. Even a dramatic burst of thunder followed by a heavy downpour brings out the kid (or TOAST model) in me. I suppose it's the element of surprise and the unexpected pursuit of suddenly running for cover and giddily laughing along the way. Blame it on TOAST, my childhood, whatever.

Anyway, despite what some grumpy Brits (that would be my relatives by the way) might think about their own weather system, I happen to find it rather romantic.

Brides nearly always want a perfect sunny day for their wedding and worry about inclement weather imposing on planned events. Particularily an outdoor wedding. We try to reassure them that a rainy day wedding is far from being a spoiler. For one thing, it's a known fact that photography is best on an overcast or rainy day. And in some cultures rain on your wedding day is a sign of good luck. Ok maybe that's a stretch.......Well maybe it is, who knows !

We've certainly had our share of rainy weddings. But you know what ? They were really lovely. Here's a few snapshots we took.......

Miller Lash House, an Arts and Crafts manor in Highland Creek (Toronto)

I love this house. It is sooo gorgeous. Even the rain doesn't distract from its beauty. In fact I think it only adds to the romance of the place. It has such lovely paths and is surrounded by incredible lush greenery and huge evergreens. The landscape has a slight rolling hilliness about it.

It was a tented affair in the garden. We did simple, lush peony bouquets for centrepieces. I actually loved the sound of the rain gently falling on the tent. Everyone just quietely worked away at setting up.

The bridal flowers

This garden wedding took place at the bride's family home located in a gorgeous neighbourhood in Toronto known as Hoggs Hollow. It's a little hidden Eden in the north part of town and has the some of the loveliest homes and gardens.

The home (though you don't see it in the picture) has a charming white picket fence and you're only seeing a very small portion of the front garden. It was so lush and green (wet summer). That's me pointing my finger somewhere towards the house.The sky was overcast and yes, it did rain that evening.

The back garden had a pool that had to be covered over to accomodate the guest tables, the band and bar. The tenting was quite lovely.

The company that erected the tent allowed for the

Japanese Maples and other foliages to be part of the setting. Isn't it pretty ?

The flowers included hydrangeas, dahlias, roses and orchids with ivy tendrils.

NYC street style meets sophisticated southern wedding style.........

And it's beautiful. Come and have a look........

This is the chicest wedding I have seen in a while. I love the bride's style and taste. Her dress is a gorgeous, ethereal creation in the softest grey by J Mendel.

Taylor Tomasi Hill, an editor at Marie Claire magazine, lives and works in NYC. However, she is a southern gal and chose to have her wedding back home in Dallas, Texas.

Her style is wonderfully eclectic; a fabulous mixture of bold and daring, classic and elegant.

A very pretty redhead who has a great way with clothes, mashing up her looks, yet always looking chic and pulled together.

Her wedding ? Divine .........

Taylor wanted to infuse a 1920's vibe to her nuptials and successfully combined romantic and modern elements .....my idea of a perfect wedding.

I love her hair....... a finger waved 1920's style, finished in a classic low chignon. The metallic clutch is by Chanel; the running shoes Superga. Taylor is known for running about town in her sneakers.

Her shoes are from Azzedine Alaia.....at the same time modern and vintage, yet totally sexy !

The bouquet: a romantic mix of peonies, freesia, lily of the valley, anemones and other deliciously sweet flowers.

The reception flowers: dreamy, tumbling bouquets of peonies, french tulips and lilacs.

A contemporary garden setting, two extra long and extra wide tables with simple flowers.

Mmmm, I would love to have been a guest at this relaxed, sophisticated celebration.

Flowers for Helen

Just a quick post to let you know how thrilled we are that Helen Mirren loved the flowers we did for her scenes and the large Christmas wreath we did for the front door of her hotel. Fingers crossed they don't cut the scenes.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to meet her but heard back that she was incredibly lovely. Apparently she walked into the production offices and casually introduced herself around. How sweet !

Sorry I don't have pics for this post. My house is under complete renovation and I don't really have proper access to the computer. So I am writing this from my laptop.

Really can't wait to catch up with all of my favourite blog pals. Things are just all over the place at the moment.

Having fun with the movies...

We've been working on flowers for a real live major motion picture filming here in Toronto.

RED....(you heard it here first) starring Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Morgan Freeman and most importantly........the lovely, extremely talented Ms. Helen Mirren. I'm so excited. Mainly about Helen of course. And we have been hired to provide quite a few of the florals for certain scenes. We've already done a huge ballroom scene complete with a floral homage to the American flag. A beautiful flag by the way.

While I don't know the complete story, I understand it is a political spoof and Helen plays a former CIA big shot who has now retired and runs an exquisite B&B (I'm sure) in the country. Sooo, we will be putting together some very pretty floral arrangements for the lovely hotel run by the ever so chic Helen Mirren (don't know her character's name).

The spec is "very Martha Stewart". No problem. As well one of the scenes calls for Helen's character to be arranging flowers for guest's rooms and around the hotel and we'll be providing the flowers for her. We've been working with the set decorators and buyers and I have to tell you this has been a delightful project to work on.

And I've been told that Helen is a dream to work with. Talk about six degrees of separation. Yikes !!!

Just thinking.....

I know I haven't posted much this year. Actually.....once. But it's not from lack of desire or interest in doing so.

You see I've been doing a lot of thinking about and organizing a whole bunch of other matters; the flower business, the house renos, what to do about the back garden this spring as well as what kinds of topics to blog about this year.

For starters, we're in the midst of updating our website which I am very excited about. Some final tweaking and we'll be ready to take orders online and show more of our wedding and events work. And as soon as it goes live I will post it here and keep my fingers crossed that you'll visit and like what you see.

Another new endeavour this year will be the introduction of flower classes. We have done them in the past but very sporadically. However, this year we'll be hosting regular classes with a special focus. Our first class will coincide with Mother's Day where we are inviting mothers and daughters (and sons if they are so inclined) to join us at our studio for a few hours of flower arranging Wild thyme style! Naturally there will be tea, coffee and pastries and also a glass of bubbly to celebrate. Future classes will range from learning to make a hand tied bouquet to tips on flowers for your wedding.

The house renos ? Well, the kitchen's almost finished; the new windows have been installed throughout, David continues to knock out walls (what's with men and demolition work - must make them feel like a kid again or something). But I'm told within about a month things will be back to semi-normal. One lives in hope.

Oh and by the way Pamela Terry, David's ok with a little bit of tufting on the couch. As long as we keep the colour manly with not too many tufts. However, his very weathered beaten up leather chair stays. Ugggh! We'll cover it with a lovely suzani fabric or something just as pretty for when guests come round.

The back garden ? Dreaming of a secret garden ....an urban paradise........but will settle for neat and tidy (at least this year).

As for blogging ? As always, I love to share things I find inspiring, beautiful, fun or whatever strikes my fancy. It works best that way. But I think you're more likely to see a few more flower posts thrown in.

Sorry about the long post, but looking forward to finally catching up with all my favourite blogs. I know I've missed lots.

2010 Paris Couture Show: 1915: Blood and Opulence

I was perusing the NY Times this past weekend and found myself in the Style section (as usual) checking out the latest couture fashions fresh off the Paris runways. Of course there they were, the usual suspects; Chanel, Dior, Balmain.......When suddenly the picture below appeared and stopped me in my tracks. These dresses made me swoon. How sensual yet very strong. And the colour....what a red ! The metallic texture of the silvery dress with the khaki military coat....outstanding. Now these were dresses for real women (at least in our dreams, right ladies ?). None of that frou frou silliness or sexy kittenish stuff aimed at 20 something starlets with more cash than taste. No sireee, this is Tilda Swinton territory.

The designer's name wasn't familiar to me....Josephus Thimister. However, I did uncover that he had a rebellious past. Mr. Thimister didn't play by the rules. A decade ago he flirted with politics and fashion...tried to make a statement... politically, fashionably, artistically... and it cost him his job as Creative Director at Balenciaga.

He disappeared. Still worked in the industry but kept a low profile.

Josephus took inspiration from an old photo of a young Russian prince who apparently was always dressed in imperial miltary gear and sadly murdered at the age of 13. This was in 1915 at the start of WW1.

Thimister makes a connection with the beginnings of WW1 and the present through this collection. WW1 represented the beginning of modern warfare; the horror, the bloodshed and the isolation that still plagues us today. But he also reminds us of the dignity of people in the face of war. The noble warrior and the sacrifices of ordinary citizens.

He also reveals beauty.

I totally love this collection; the colour palette, the references and the sheer drama found in simple utilitarian jackets mixed with luxurious cloths and colours.

The uniform. I especially love the capelet and the armlets. They remind me of armour.

The practical, handsome styling of this cape/coat. Isn't it divine ?

I am so in love with this sweeping skirt, military jacket and cross sash.

The red duchesse satin is incredible. And the belting is beyond stylish. And of course the capelet is chic, chic, chic.

Simply amazing.

Where it all began for me. The front of the red dress...definitely my favourite.......

While I'm not one to think that fashion and politics typically make for great partners. I really do believe that Josephus Thimister is a sincere, thoughtful and provocative designer. I for one (fashion outsider that I am) saw this as a beautiful, strong and sensual collection.

Yipee !!

Oh to look this glamorous and so utterly bored !

While my New Years Eve party days are behind me, I could have a lot of fun lounging about on the sofa on the BIG night in this most gorgeous deep chocolate brown ball gown.

Let's see, we'll be sipping champagne (ok, prosecco) served with some delicious canapes, perhaps with some oysters (actually, no oysters - not a fave thing I'm afraid) and followed by scrumptious macaroons, ideally from Laduree, but realistically from Patachou (a great French patisserie here in Toronto).

We'll likely have some music playing softly in the background -- a little of everything; lounge, Cole Porter, Vivaldi, Brazilian bossa nova and a little pop and indie stuff just to stop things from feeling too highbrow. Depending on our mood, a film from The Film Buff might be in order (something cheery I hope) and if time allows and I can hang in there, a late game of Scrabble.

Throughout the evening we'll chat about our resolutions and aspirations for 2010......the goals, the dreams and the bets on how long it will take to break them !

Last year I followed a set of resolutions offered up on Vivre.com (of all places --my goodness) and found them to be spot on. They were all doable, achievable and I pretty much kept these in check for 2009. I think I'll build on these for 2010:

Well ok, I still have to work on the black clothes thing and planning in advance, but four out of six isn't too bad.

And.... I think I'd like to take up dance lessons.......

We'll see.

Intoxicating scents......

I've just purchased my very first Diptyque candle and... I AM IN LOVE !

POMANDER ......bitter orange peel, spicy cloves and fresh cinnamon - the quintessential ambrosia for the holiday season.

Mind you, it was a toss up between this and the new limited edition TOASTED CHESTNUTS with aromas of roasted chestnuts, juniper and birch which I also found rather delicious. However, being a visual person, I wasn't so keen on the limited edition patterned glass that it came in. Plus, I felt if this was going to be my first Diptyque, I really wanted the classic label. It's sooo elegant and handsome.

All Diptyque candles are made from 100% natural ingredients and fragrances. I believe that POMANDER is one of the original scents.

Yes, I know what you're thinking, and you're right. It wasn't cheap. At $70.00 Canadian, plus taxes (13%), that's a lot of dosh on a little candle.

But as the lovely salesperson pointed out, "it's all natural essential oils and parrafin wax". And she promised "you'll get 60 hours worth of burning". I'm such a sucker for a good sales pitch !

So, according to my calculations that would work out to either one candle infusion per hour per day for 60 days (two months) or, at $70.00 divided by 60 hours, that's about $1.15 per hour of blissful aromatic heaven !

That's not so bad, is it ?

also known as....Baby's Breath

Whilst I can't say that it's one of my favourite flowers, I somehow feel obliged to come to its' defense.

Gypsophila, commonly known as "baby's breath" is typically used as a "filler" in most corner store flower shops. It's the cloud of white that surrounds the red roses or peach carnations to help "fill out" the bouquet. And to add insult to injury, it's usually wrapped in some mass produced cellophane envelope that quite frankly, depresses the hell out of me.

Shame really. As on it's own and used in great abundance, baby's breath can be quite chic and dare I say it, elegant.

A modern young bride with an ethereal mass of gypsophila. I do think you have to be of a certain age to carry this off. The flower itself feels youthful and delicate. And she looks so chic, contemporary and very stylish.

Marcel Wolterinck, the master of modern Dutch flowers. This is a florist at the top of his game using baby's breath in a fresh, modern yet classical manner. Simply beautiful.

Nikki Tibbles, Wild at Heart. Spare loft living is given a jolt of Constance Spry garden flowers meets London cool via organic hand blown glass.

The American in Paris.

Jeff Leatham gives baby's breath his trademark "tilt". Indeed gypsophila is one of his favourite flowers for those on a limited budget.

This is a very pretty use of the flower for a country wedding, especially with the birch bark wrap.

And as always, nature leads the way. Not a rose or carnation in sight.

May I suggest a visit to Jacqueline's notes on a vine blog. The post "Champagne.....An Entrepreneur's Story" (Nov.5.09), was a most delightful find.

As a woman running my own business, I am always fascinated and inspired by other women who have built successful businesses. And in this instance a woman of the 18th century ! I can't wait to get my copy !

Tufting and buttons............

I desperately want to re-upholster our sofa. To say it's fairly bland and tired looking, is quite honestly, an understatement. I was going to take a picture for this post, but just looking at it left me uninspired to do so. However, I can tell you that it has good bones and shows lots of potential.

Now, I've always considered myself a bit of a modern gal. In the past I've dreamt of replacing my rolled arm sofa (with overstuffed cushions) with something cool and contemporary, perhaps in french grey or a deep charcoal. Something with clean lines and low to the ground. You know what I mean, one of those slick Italian pieces that can seat entire families (or parties for that matter) and completely take over a room.

But.... I've changed. Or at the very least my taste has evolved to a level where I now appreciate many styles. But I'm particularly drawn to the tufted, buttoned looks seen here.

Gore Vidal, 83, author, raconteur, man of letters, outspoken American, friend (and foe) to political elites, celebrities (mostly from the 50's, 60's 70's) and an infamous correspondent with one of America's most despised men. Though very often at odds with his fellow Americans, he was and is no less concerned about its' future and place in the world.

Mr. Vidal is never dull, always provocative and someone I genuinely admire.

A modern day Constance Spry.

Her book, The New Floral Artist (published 1993) was the first flower book I ever bought (1997). And I never looked back. I fell in love...fully and completely.

What fabulous textures and colours -- all of autumn in one wreath !

You see, prior to flowers, I had worked in the really rough world of politics. I had studied Political Science at university. And as you might well imagine, I wanted to see change in the world. So with the arrogance of youth on my side I embarked on a career in the political realm. Ohhhh, how naive I was. Without going into any great detail, suffice it to say, politics was not my calling.

This epitomises summer and romance for me.

Soooo, in 1997 I was living in London (working for a politician) and one day I found myself in Paula Pryke's flower shop in Islington. I don't know why I walked in as I had never been in a flower shop before. Flowers didn't interest me. I thought it was a trivial waste of time and felt there were more important things to do.

But somehow I was drawn in. Maybe it was the glorious window display. But I suspect it was more likely my stressed out state of mind. I needed to relax and not think about work. It was Christmas and the shop was so incredibly beautiful, overflowing with flowers, exquisite bouquets, breathtaking wreaths and sumptuous garlands. The florists in their black aprons were wrapping flowers in the most elegant manner with the prettiest tissue papers and ribbons. My head literally spinned in this grotto of beauty.

On one of the consoles was the book, the one that would change the direction of my life. I purchased it, went home and read it, studied it and then reread it hundreds of times over the next few months. I memorized the ingredients to all of the arrangements, the flower names and the histories Ms. Pryke told of this wonderful world of flowers. The styling, the colour combinations, the containers.

Paula Pryke has written many books since, but this was my bible. I literally learned all about flowers and flower arranging from this modern day Constance Spry and The New Floral Artist. She has certainly influenced a generation of florists.

A few years back (June 2006 to be exact), David and I were hanging out at home. He was reading the newspapers. Me, I had just received my latest issue of House & Garden (very sorely missed by the way).

After some time and nearing the end of the magazine I saw this picture and suddenly I said: "David, I really hope this is how we will look when we grow older..."

This is Yves and Michele Halard

Up until this point, David had not seen the picture so he didn't want to know. All he heard was "older". Not a great word for most men. Or women for that matter. Then I quietly slipped the magazine in front of him. It took a moment, but then he smiled and said;"Yes, that would be very nice. Let's keep that somewhere to remind us".

Yves and Michele Halard are very famous French interior designers. Since entering the world of blogging I have discovered that quite a few bloggers have posted about them and their work.

Their house in Provence probably sums up their taste and philosphy. It is a beautiful, eclectic, slightly eccentric home.

The entryway is painted in a sky blue mixed by Yves, features a wooden chandelier (a stage prop), Spanish urns and a bust of Christ. The console is covered in a glorious red antique silk textile. The photograph on the wall is by their son, photographer Francois Halard.

The dining room is a wonderful, mad clash of garden style chairs, geometric rugs, noeclassical moldings, Italian marble on the mantel, a terra cotta pot of ivy trails and Royal Limoges dinner ware.

The Library holds a large number of books and magazines. The white side chairs are from Versailles and the sumptuous carpet is a 19th century Aubusson.

As you can see Yves and Michele love colour.

At the end of the article, they spoke about their work and life. One question and response caught my attention.

What is the secret to a welcoming decor?

" You need a little disorder to go with a little fantasy. If you are too neat, you'll never have a warm house. There should be magazines lying around. Perfection is intimidating".

Just a little busy with work at the moment.

I haven't blogged or checked my blog for several days now.

My dear partner David dared me - no, in fact he double dared me to stay away from the computer for the entire long weekend (Canadian Thanksgiving). And of course, being a good competitor, I took the challenge.

Mind you, it wasn't easy. My favourite day of the week is Sunday (mornings to be precise) when it's all quiet and cosy. I make myself a pot of tea and some toast, settle in and do some catching up on my favourite blogs.

However, I couldn't do so until this morning. And what a lovely surprise awaited me.

The delightful Miss Gigi of The Magpies Fancy very kindly shared some of my posts on her blog. And said the nicest things. Thank you Gigi. You really made my day. No, you've made my week !

I don't think the green translated to my post, but it actually is quite beautiful. You may have to visit style.com to get the true colour. I love the exaggerated boat style neckline, the 3/4 sleeves, the shapely style of the dress, and her cap is so chic - very Parisian, or could be 1930's New York. And the shoes..perfect complement. Very stylish indeed.

I cannot tell you how excited I am for my dear friend Mark Laird. He is the co-author of a wonderful book on the life of the fabulous British aristocrat and artist Mary Delany.

Mrs. Delany and Her Circle, 2009, Yale Press

The cover image is of the botanical Passiflora, one of Mrs. Delany's paper collages/mosaics.

The book will become widely available in November. However, lucky for me, Mark and his wife Sharon dropped by my studio today to show me the newly published copy. The cover is beautiful and the book itself is simply outstanding. It stole my breath away.

THIS is the mesmerising story of the life of one happening woman in the 18th century!

Mary's friends included Handel, a close confidante and Jonathan Swift, a neighbour. She was courted by John Wesley and studied drawing with Hogarth and flower drawing with Georg Ehret.

Need I go on ? Let's see..... she studied painting with Joseph Goupy and, as you have seen above, she had her portrait painted by John Opie.

At the age of 72, Mrs. Delany embarked on a series of beautiful botanical paper mosiacs. Her illustrations of plants and flowers are made entirely of coloured paper. The craftsmanship and detail are so accurate that it's hard to believe that they were created by a 70 year old woman.

Mrs. Delany produced close to one thousand botanical illustrations in the 10 years that followed. Astounding! There is a wonderful exhibition of her life and work being shown at The Yale Center for British Art from now until January 2010.

In addition to her paper collages, the exhibition also pays tribute to a woman who led an extraodinary cultural and artistic life.

King George the Third and his wife Queen Charlotte were great patrons of Mary's work. She also had a circle of friends that would be the envy of most of us - as noted previously.

Mary was a great woman of letters, skilled at embroidery and shell work, decoupage, and marvelous gardener (A regular 18th century Martha Stewart I should think..... then some!).

Edmund Burke called her "A woman of fashion for all ages".

I'd love to see a film of Mary's life and art produced. What do you think ?
